Local anesthesia. Does heating the solution reduce discomfort?

More comfortable local anesthesia. Is heating the anesthetic solution a good measure to reduce pain and discomfort during application? The studies, although still scarce, seem to indicate that yes, it can be a good measure to decrease the pain during the application of anesthesia, especially in colder days and in regions with more severe winter. Some anesthetic warmers are available in the national market.

Effect of warming local anesthetic solutions before intraoral administration in dentistry: a systematic review

Sunny Priyatham Tirupathi1 and SrinityaRajasekhar2

Abstract
The purpose of the present systematic review was to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of heated and unheated anesthesia solutions in reducing pain during intraoral injection administration.

Methods
PubMed, Ovid SP and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials were searched from publication years 1990 to 2020 with relevant MeSH terms. Studies were selected by titles and abstracts, followed by evaluation of the full texts of the included studies.

Results
A total of four studies were included in the systematic review. The endpoints evaluated were subjective and objective pain during administration of heated anesthesia solution compared with unheated local anesthesia solution. Among the four studies that evaluated self-reported pain scores, three studies showed significantly lower pain scores associated with heated local anesthesia. Only two studies evaluated the observed pain score, and both reported a significantly lower pain reaction with heated local anesthesia solution.

Conclusion
Within the limits of this systematic review, heating the anesthesia solution to body temperature (37℃) before administration appeared to reduce discomfort during the administration of intraoral local anesthesia, and further high-quality studies should be conducted to validate the same.
