INTRODUCTION In undergraduate schools, the teaching of endodontics develops manual skills gradually, starting with preclinical training in cases of minor to major complexity. This area of dentistry is reported to have the perception of use and chemical mechanical preparation performed with different endodontic instruments by students with greater technical difficulty in performing procedures. Of all the steps in endodontic therapy, the chemical mechanical preparation of root canals is reported, by undergraduate students, as the most challenging. Because of the characteristics of nitinol alloy, such as high flexibility, the use of nickel-titanium (NiTi) instruments is associated with a lower rate of transportation and maintenance of the original canal shape, lower incidence of accidents during the procedure, and less apical extrusion when compared to the use of stainless steel hand instruments.
In this sense, there is a trend to implement the use of NiTi instruments in the clinical practice of Brazilian professionals. A recent survey indicated that 88% of dentists (66% specialists in Endodontics) report the use of mechanized instrumentation. Therefore, with the increasing use of NiTi endodontic instruments, the contribution of the teaching and practice of stainless steel instruments is questioned, since they are associated to a higher occurrence of steps, longer instrumentation time, risk of perforations and deviations. Despite the advantages of NiTi instruments are reported in the literature, their use in undergraduate practical activities is still low, mainly due to their higher acquisition cost.
