Endodontic treatment of a periapical cyst.

Endodontic treatment of a periapical cyst. A patient came to the clinic complaining of swelling, pressure and pain in the ocular, nasal and upper left dental region. Clinical examination revealed positive vitality tests on teeth 21 and 23. Radiographic examination and tomography revealed an extensive periapical radiolucent image in the upper left region, as well as endodontic treatment of tooth 22. A puncture and decompression maneuver was also performed, with characteristic cystic fluid, which enabled the diagnosis of a periapical cyst.

The upper left lateral incisor tooth was then re-treated and medicated with Bio C Temp for 30 days. After returning, with no signs or symptoms, the canal was filled and the patient was instructed to wait for the possibility of further surgical intervention.

Case carried out by students Ester Ramos and Luciana Quirino, from the endodontics specialization course at HPG Brasília.

INTRODUCTION

By definition, the radicular inflammatory odontogenic cyst is an epithelium-lined cavity that originated from the epithelial remains of Malassez. This pathological entity varies significantly in terms of size and location, with no predilection for sites. Some authors report a higher incidence in the anterior region of the maxilla. As its name implies, its development is closely related to an inflammatory stimulus, which explains the frequent relationship with caries activity in affected individuals. In most of the studies found in the literature, this is the most prevalent cyst in the stomatognathic system, with up to 84.5% of odontogenic cysts. Epidemiological data shows that males in the third decade of life are the most affected.
