Acting and knowledge of emergency rescue teams in cases of dental trauma.
Paper published in BDJ, with Prof. Cláudio Talge and PhD students Amjad Abu Hasna and Tatiane Bittencourt (UNESP) and Prof. Carlos Camargo (University of Florida).
Objective: Dental trauma is regularly frequent in patients seen by rescue teams at accident sites and by emergency responders in hospitals. However, these professionals receive little or no information on how to care for and act in cases of traumatic injuries to hard and soft tissues. The aim of this study was to evaluate the level of knowledge of rescue and emergency team professionals (physicians, nurses and paramedics) about the care of dental trauma. Material and methods: 196 professionals from rescue and emergency units received a standardized questionnaire with 5 questions regarding the care of dental trauma and preservation of avulsed dental tissue (a tooth or its fragment). Results: The results showed a high level of care of dental trauma patients by paramedics, nurses and physicians, with very low knowledge on how to deal with these cases, and moderate results on the best way to preserve the avulsed tooth, and the actions taken during the rescue process. Conclusion: there is a high occurrence of dental trauma cases attended by rescue and emergency teams, with a lack of knowledge, suggesting the need for more educational campaigns for these professionals with long-term follow-up.
