Tomography in endodontics
Despite all the evolution in endodontic science, there was an obstacle related to radiographic examination, the two-dimensional observation of structures, with superimposed images of fundamental interest to diagnosis and treatment. With the advent of computed tomography in dentistry, we could then have access to images with three dimensions. However, the high cost, difficult access and low resolution of the images were still an impediment to its use in clinical routine.
A revolution occurred in this area in dentistry, the Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) technology. From its development, greater access to exams was obtained, with lower cost, better image resolution, and lower doses of radiation. In endodontics, the use became more popular with the emergence of devices with even more accurate resolution and images with greater detail and clarity. Therefore, the tendency is that CBCT scans will be used in clinical routine, for all cases, both for diagnosis and for difficulties during treatment and proservation.
Therefore, CBCT has numerous advantages, such as three-dimensional observation, absence of overlaps, possibility of observation in multiple planes, dimensional fidelity, and being a facilitator of communication between patient professional and even between professionals.
However, the exam has relevant disadvantages, such as the high cost in relation to the radiographic exam, and the production of image artifacts, interferences caused by the presence of metal. These disadvantages tend to decrease with time, with the popularization of the exams and the development of new technologies and image treatment software.
