Special mechanized Ni-Ti endodontic instruments4
These refer to instruments exclusively driven by mechanical devices to perform the continuous or alternating (also called reciprocating) widening movement (Figure 4.64). For Lopes and Siqueira, in 2015,4 the term "files", although routinely used, is incorrect for the designation of these instruments, because they were not developed and should not be driven from the filing movement, and therefore they should be called endodontic reamers.

The active parts of special mechanized Ni-Ti endodontic instruments vary in size and design. The actuating stem is metallic (brass-copper-zinc alloy) and is crimped to the instrument intermediary. Some present body and shaft obtained by machining from the same metallic wire (without crimping).

Normally, the shaft is 15 mm long, but it can be shorter (11 to 13 mm). Smaller instruments and counter-angles give the set a reduced total length, which facilitates, for example, instrumentation in posterior teeth of patients with limited mouth opening.

The drive rod of the endodontic reamers is usually gold or silver plated, with colored rings or grooves used to identify the taper and the size of the instruments in D0, besides presenting a universal diameter of 2.30 mm, which allows it to be adapted to counter-angles of any brand. The intermediary presents a variable size according to the length of the body and the active part of the instruments, and the tip is circular conical with a sharp, rounded or truncated end, obtained by a machining process called external conical turning. The "passage" from the tip to the conical helical cutting shaft occurs through a transition curve, which reduces the possibility of locking (immobilization) of the instruments in continuous rotation inside the root canal, minimizing the chances of fracture, step formation and the occurrence of root perforations.

The helical cutting shank of special mechanized Ni-Ti endodontic instruments is tapered with the base toward the intermediate. It is most often obtained from a metal wire by a machining process called external threading or tapping. However, it can also be established by twisting.

The conical helical cutting rod consists of helixes and helical grooves arranged obliquely to the long axis of the instrument (right to left). In a few instruments/systems, both are aligned in the opposite direction (left to right) .
